Rainbow Sprinkle Birthday Cake

One of the very best things about living here is being so close to so many family members. Obviously there are my mother and father in law upstairs along with a sister in law, but I also have an amazing Sister in law just 4 exits down the freeway. We love to spend as many Friday nights with each other as we can, with the kids playing and us adults enjoying each others company (she’s hilarious!)

Anyway we also get to spend time together for family birthday dinners. Last week was my nephews birthday. We got together for just dessert, and I offered to make a simple cake. He requested chocolate cake and vanilla frosting! Beyond that it didn’t matter. So I had a ton of sprinkles left from my Ice Cream Parlor birthday party and having seen an adorable cake on pinterest with sprinkles I decided it was the perfect time to try it out!!!

Then as I was taking pictures I moved it to quickly and it FLIPPED OVER!!!! GAH!!!! Luckily the cake didn’t break, so I flipped it back, re-spread the frosting, intermixed with sprinkles now, and re-sprinkled it! It worked great (and of course tasted amazing- and that’s all that really matters, right?)

Here is how I sprinkled it: I tilted a FRESHLY frosted cake, poured a pile of sprinkles into my hand and put it against the bottom of the cake and then brought my hand up the cake, pressing in the sprinkles as I went. For the top I poured a pile on and softly spread it around, pouring more where I needed it.

Pretty simple, BOTH times I did it! And quick to, an easy last min cake decoration if you need one! AND I have to say but I kind of LOVED the extra texture of the sprinkles in the frosting! I might just do that under the fondant in my next cake for FUN!

Blue chevron ombre family birthday dinner- cheesy potatoes recipe

It was Computer boy and my husband’s birthday’s! For birthday’s here we have a family dinner the Sunday before or after every year.

Since this was an off party year and we were just doing the family dinner I decided I might as well dress up dinner with labels (I’ve really enjoyed making labels for the last few parties!). Since not everyone eats the sames foods we do I wanted to include the BLANK blue ombre chevron labels so you could create your own!

We had Computer boy’s favorite, ham. But since the rest of us like more than just one food item with dinner I also made butter rolls and cheesy potatoes (aka funeral potatoes- but who likes food that has the word funeral in the title?)

Here is MY recipe!

Cheesy Potatoes
(aka Funeral potatoes)

1 1/2 lbs frozen hash-browns
16 oz sour cream
bunch of green onion chopped
1 lrg can of cream of chicken soup (or our favorite 2 small cans cream of celery soup)
1+ C grated cheddar cheese
1/4 C melted butter
1 sleeve crushed Ritz (or other buttered crackers)

Mix sour cream, onions, soup and cheddar. Add the frozen hash-browns and finish mixing. Spread into a glass pan (9*13). mix the butter and crackers and spread over the top. Cook at 350 for 1 hour or till warm in center

Blue Chevron Ombre birthday cake

The last few years Computer boy had Lego parties with friends so this year we did a family party only (we attempt to do an every other year thing, but there is the occasional exception). The fun thing about Computer boy’s birthday is that he was born on his dad’s birthday! So we celebrate both boys (well man and boy) together for these family parties.

When I asked Computer boy what he wanted for his cake (last year was the lego head the year before the lego blocks) he said he wanted a blue cake.  That’s it.. a blue cake, oh with fondant.  But I couldn’t just cover a cake with blue fondant and leave it at that!  So I took it as the perfect opportunity to try out an ombre layered cake!

I stared with a double batch of my white cake, and added a little bit of blue and baked a thin layer, added more blue to the batter and baked another thin layer, repeat again and again… So from light light blue to dark blue- GORGEOUS layers! I added the same blue to some white butter-cream and put the layers together with it, dark on the bottom to light on top!

Frost the whole thing… and then I covered it with white fondant. I created ombre chevron labels for our small dinner party, so I wanted to use chevrons on the cake too. Using the parchment technique I used with this mustache and lips cake I cut a chevron template and using my airbrush gun sprayed the cake, attempting to go from darker to lighter. Not TOTALLY in love with it, but it’s always having a cake with no major expectations to play around with it!

The birthday boy’s hadn’t seen the layered inside (since I bake and frost at night when they are in bed) so cutting into the cake was a HUGE reveal moment for the whole party! Everyone was super in love and impressed with it! Totally worth baking for the ENTIRE DAY!  I LOVED (sing-song voice) how it turned out.
