3rd birthday party- Flashback Friday

totoro1998
This party is actually from my oldest daughters 3rd birthday! So 6 1/2 years ago! WAY before I got into cake decorating and back when I only had 2 kiddo’s! We were living in Japan and had been for a year. So finding party supplies and baking supplies was a bit difficult. I had so much fun though! This party was not only her birthday but our going away party as well, since we were moving back to the states a few weeks later. We invited everyone from church, our apartment building and some of my husbands co-workers. My in laws were even in town, visiting Japan for the 2nd time since we’d live there, so it was a really fun gathering.

Even before living in Japan we loved My Neighbor Totoro and other studio Ghibli movies. While in Japan we were able to visit Tokyo and go visit Studio Ghibli! It was such a fun year. Out of the 32 places I’ve lived Japan was my number 1 favorite. I would move back in a heartbeat and stay forever. In my husbands last job he was actually hired for a permanent position in the Tokyo Office but before he finished training the economy crashed and they canceled overseas appointments and that’s when we lost our job. Having that hope of living in Japan and having it crushed made it all that much harder when he lost his job. I love our year in Japan and looking back at these pictures is wonderful and painful at the same time.

ANYWAY, when it came time for her birthday a Totoro theme seemed an easy choice! I handmade all the invitations. This is way before cricuts, so I cut out about 50 of these Totoro shapes and umbrellas! Then cut out the eyes, stomach and back. Then painted the whiskers, eyes, claw’s, etc… I also wrote out the Kangi for the invitation! I don’t actually read or write kangi, but my husband does, so he found the right kangi for me and I wrote it out.

Since the guests were all ages from newborn to grandparents I had to have all sorts of different activites. We used our church building for the party so we had a nice big room for the party to take place in. I had a TV and DVD player in one corner for those who would want to sit and watch the movie. I had 2 different puzzles on 2 different walls for those who liked to sit and concentrate on something.

I also prepared some games that everyone could play. Since they do parties very differently in Japan they were all very excited to play some classic American party games. I started with my Totoro version of pin the tail on the donkey. I made a full sized Totoro. Since my supplies were limited to what I could find there I had to tape 16 poster boards together. I then pined it to my wall and started sketching. I penciled it until I was happy with it then painted him, leaving one of the chest markers blank for the game. This is a crappy picture, but it actually shows the poster boards pieced together best!

He was also a great decoration for the party room! He took up quite a bit of one wall. The movie is set in the forest so while I wasn’t allowed do TOO much to the room I tried to add tree’s to the walls and ceiling using paper and balloons! Overall I’m still pleased with how well it came together with what I could find!

He was a little too tall for the birthday girl, but since 85% of the guests were adults tall was okay! He ended up getting bent into the wall. There weren’t any wall’s that were perfectly flat so it was the best I could do! Oh well! Everyone loved him, and they all enjoyed the game as well.

I also made a pinata. My first homemade pinata in fact! Lucky for me he’s kind of balloon shaped so it worked out decently enough. We hung him against the back wall and everyone was fascinated by it! In fact once all the kid’s got a turn the adults all wanted one too! It was a hoot! I wasn’t sure how many layers to make him so he ended up pretty strong. He broke off his rope before he cracked! Once he broke off the rope they kept taking turns hitting him until he finally broke open and we spilled out the candy!

Another game was guess how many Soot Sprites! This is what Soot sprites look like in the movie. They are these fuzzy black sprites that leave a black mess everywhere. They live in abandon houses and move out when there is happiness in the house. An adorable character.

I used yarn and made my own. I made a LOT of yarn balls, 179 in fact. I spread them all over the floor in the party room by tossing them all over the place. I made a few different sizes in the beginning, but it was easier and faster to make them all the same. I considered adding eyeballs to them all, but I couldn’t find enough goggley eyes!

Then we had people guess how many there were. We kept track of the guesses on the white board. The guests had fun drawing and decorating the board for me. Funny thing was we had a tie for the winner! 7 above and 7 below! AND they were a married couple so they shared the prize!

I had prizes for each game, a smaller totoro puzzle, and of course party favors. In the movie Totoro gives the cute little girls a folded bamboo leave with various nuts in it. So I made over 40 of my own bamboo/nut packages and attached a totoro cell phone charm to it. They all seems tickled with the idea of a favor and the whole party went over well!

Since they like healthy food in Japan we mostly had fruits and veggies, but I did make my own totoro shaped cookie cutters and made cookies and cupcakes. BUT my camera died. TOTALLY died. Most of these pictures are from the night before the party when I was setting up and a few from my in law’s camera the day of the party. BUT this is the only picture of the food. Sad, I know! There always seems to be that one thing that when I sit down to blog about a party of craft I realized I didn’t get a shot of! SO frustrating! But it is what it is! Over all the birthday girl had a great day, my in laws had fun, the members of our church and neighbors all enjoyed participating in an American birthday party and I was happy with how well it went. Can’t ask for more than that!

Lego Indiana Jones Birthday Party

So the party was last week but I’m a bit behind on my posting!  BUT it was a great party and I’m SO excited to show you the fun 5th Lego Indiana Jones party we had for P, Lego Boy.  Everything turned out well, but I did suffer from a lack of sleep and missed a ton of pictures!  Crazy!!!!  Well here’s what I have.
lego indiana jones birthday invitation
Remember the Lego Indiana Jones invitation?  I know it was a long time ago.  I made it weeks ago in order to give it to Lego Boy’s preschool classmates before they got out for the summer.  Well as of 2 days before the party out of 19 invitations I had only heard from 1 person!  Let’s just say I was not sure how much of anything to make???  Luckily I heard from 7 more people in the 24 hours before the party and was able to better guess the numbers that would show up.
Indiana Jones birthday party table food cake
Here is the Food table.  I had water bottles, candy and..  THE CAKE!!!  It was so much fun to make!  I tried to make the cake layers represent different parts of the first level of the Lego Indiana Jones game.  It’s also the first adventure of the first movie.

You can see the Stone Face on the bottom layer, the Cave entrance on the 2nd layer with THE stone rolling down the hill, and the Fertility (not that the kids knew that) idol on the top layer.  I also included from the game the white spikes, the different colored coins, the ferns and the extra life hearts.  Lego boy LOVED it!
lego birthday party candy
As part of the candy I made some Lego shaped hard candy, marshmallow flavored!  It’s always nice to get more use out of my homemade silicone mold!  Using the same mold I also made the favors, homemade Lego soap and homemade Lego crayons!  Although it got so hot that the crayons started to melt so we had to move them off the table pretty quickly.

We had an Indiana Jones obstacle course.  It started with a HUGE grey exercise ball that “chased” them down the hill at the side of the house.  It ended with a Play crawl tunnel filled with plastic bugs, and then a JUMP over the rubber snake pit!  Since ended up having all girl guests they didn’t LOVE it they way Lego boy did.  He and the other three kids enjoyed the obstacle course over and over again before the party started.   And all that matters really is that the birthday boy loves it right?  The one thing that was the BIGGEST hit that I totally forgot to take pictures of was a “dig” that we made.  We took some change and other “treasures” and mixed them with some plaster of paris.  Then the kids, using hammers, dug them out of the dried plaster.  I was surprised that it was so popular, but glad they had so much fun with it!
On the other table we had the dozen Indiana Jones Satchels

For one of the games I made some Treasure hunt Journals.  In the center I included a fold out full size Map of the back yard, and the activities.  I somehow managed to FORGET to take pictures of half of the activities.  I pulled an all nighter the night before working on the cake and now that I’m working on the post I can tell!
indiana jones birthday party journal map
I pulled these images from the Lego game off the internet, I printed 12 of each image off and we hid them all around the yard!
indiana jones lego birthday party treasures
We did a treasure hunt and when they found an item they glued it into their journals!  No one found all 12 items but a few of the guests found 11 of the 12 items!

The journal fit perfectly into the satchel (as well as the other favors, the soap and crayons)

The one thing that Lego Boy insisted on was a pinata.  He’s been talking about the pinata about as long as he’s been talking about having a Lego Indiana Jones birthday party.  I went through a ton of different ideas and ended with a Crystal Skull.  I used a basic balloon shape for the pinata.  Then to decorate I painted it white, drew on HUGE eyes, a small nose and long teeth (with a black sharpie) and ended with a shiny silver spray paint layer.  It actually turned out better than I expected, but it did NOT turn out well in any pictures.  I mean terrible.  I’m not sure if it’s the fact that it’s so shiny or what, but these pictures are BEYOND bad!  A new camera has moved WAY up my “to buy someday” list…

Rainbow Garden Birthday Party!

Finally the party post!  We had the party on Memorial day, so I was nervous that no one would come!  How devastating for a sweet little girl.  I invited 12, and we got 5, it was perfect!  We had two crafts planned and had a table devoted to them.  Pots to paint and then seeds to plant.  Then felt for flower headbands!

And of course a Candy Bar, water and the rainbow birthday party CAKE!  I just love how pretty the rainbow ruffled tablecloth’s turned out!  They really added a lot of color to the party!  I’ve always hated seeing the table legs but never thought to do anything about it until now.  I don’t know if I can go back to unsightly table legs…

I used the Butterfly garland all over, the balcony…

And in all the tree’s!  It ended up being a great day, a bit overcast, but warm and a little windy.  It made the ruffles and butterflies move and flow so it was fun.  Although it didn’t help with the crafts too much!

I made rainbow tissue pom pom’s!  They turned out so much better than my Dr. Seuss birthday party pom pom’s.  I used more tissue then last time and they were so full and fun.  Last time it was just 8 sheets of tissue for each pom pom and this time I used 12!  10 would probably work well, but since I had 6 colors I doubled each one and got 12!

Here is everyone (My mother in law was so great and helped so much, so did my Sweet Sister in law, although I didn’t get any pictures of her!) painting their pots.  I wish I had gotten a better picture, but I bought a rug of fake grass and cut it into place mats!  The girls thought it was really fun and it fit with our theme well.  It’s always fun to see kids to crafts.  Some go fast, some slow, some detailed, some thrown together!  Since we had less girls, and more supplies the other three kids got in on the action too.  That is until Grandpa and Dad took the boys away for some Circuit City fun!

Here is one of the hair bows the girls made.  I used the template from Holidash.  Each of the girls cut their own petals so they all turned out different!

Finally we ended with a pinata!  I wasn’t going to do one, thinking my daughter was too old but she let me know that she was NOT too old and she for sure wanted one.  But because of the blogger conference I didn’t have time to make one.  Luckily I found this one at a party store!
rainbow garden birthday party pinata
This was one strong pinata.  I think each girl got like 5 turns before I finally just poured it out!  Even little S got in on the action!  Could she be any cuter?  What a sweet spoiled ball of fun!  The only thing that would have made the party better is the two things that I waited too long to order.  Wings in rainbow color’s for the back of every chair (talk about unsightly, I’ve got to get some chair covers made!) and the real live butterflies!  I just waited too long to order them!  The Caterpillars arrived a few days before the party, but not in enough time to change into butterflies, and the wings arrived the next day.  I’ll save them for our next party, with two girls I’m sure the wings will be used again!

And George just loved that everyone was out in the yard with him.  I think he thought the party was for him!  He loved the dropped food, the petting, and tummy rubs, etc..
