Don’t walk and talk at the same time!

So this morning I was talking with my sister in law while walking down the stairs to take my shower. Thats when it happened. I slipped. Yup, just a slip and my legs went down, my body fell back and my hand went down, naturally, to catch myself. Thats when I heard the CRACK. I knew before I felt the pain that it was broken. Well I was in my PJ’s (read- NO BRA!) so The Reader (oldest) had to help me put on my bra. Not something she knows anything about yet! It took a few tries, I got whipped with the bra a few times! But she did it! Then she had to help me with the rest of my outfit! We got my husbands aunt to come watch the kids and my sister in law drove me to the ER.
broken wrist
By this time we got to the ER there was a pretty obvious BUMP on my wrist. I guess there goes the small hope that it was just a sprain… After an hour or so I got the x-ray… Another hour or so and the Dr. came in telling me that it WAS broken. BUT not the bump that hurts. The other side of my wrist???? I’m confused! Then she said she wanted the radiologist to take a look. Another hour or so… Yep, the other side, the BUMP is broken too. How bad? They can’t tell.
broken wrist
SOOO after 5 hours at the ER they sent me home wrapped up in a splint, drugs and an appt with an orthopedic Dr. tomorrow (today now). So I’ll keep you posted on what is really going on. Maybe a picture of some x-rays and a cast??? We’ll see. I’ll be asking “What does this mean for the rest of the summer, swimming at Lagoon, Bear Lake (reunion), the remodel, my crafts and Etsy store and finally my cakes!” Hopefully I’ll get some answers. The worst part so far? How LONG it’s taking me to write this post one handed!
broken wrist
While this messed up my day, maybe some of my summer plans, One good thing did happen. My best friend from high school and her family were driving through town today. We were supposed to meet up at the park with the kiddo’s. That obviously didn’t happen, BUT they generously came by the ER to see me! So sweet! It was great to see her (and family) AND they brought my sister in law and I lunch (which was totally needed). So some joy in an otherwise messed up day!!!
I’ll let you know tomorrow whats up!

When I broke and sliced up two toes two weeks before my wedding (yeah I limped down the aisle) I was in my nightgown too! This was 15 years ago before cell phones, so it took me six calls before I found a lady at home who had to come over and help me get my clothes so I could get dressed before she took me to the ER.
Are you right handed or left handed? When I broke my middle finger on my left hand last year, I was surprised how much I used just my right hand for decorating, I was still able to do a wedding cake. Of course, that is not as bad as two breaks in your wrist!

Ouch! This past December I was out delivering Christmas gifts and slipped on a patch of ice. I didn't fall very hard but I now have a plate and 13 screws in my leg. Crazy how little things can turn into big things. Hope you heal fast!

my mom slipped on ice this last summer too. Sprained one ankle badly, then the next month she fell and sprained the other one. But she, luckily, avoided surgery! Crazy how something so simple as a fall can change your life.

I've been reading your blog for awhile, so this is as good a place to comment as any.
Breaking your hand/arm is never a good thing, but especially so for a mom. We're just too darn busy. I noticed it was your left, are you right handed? Maybe some light projects or small cakes that won't take too much strain or effort on one hand.
Darn it! Wish I lived closer I would offer to help.
    Best wishes to you.

I’m so glad you did! It’s always great to hear from lurkers! I’m a lurker myself. I’m trying to be better about commenting on blogs I love to stalk! I’m right handed, so luckily I’m not AS confined as it would have been otherwise. Thanks so much for the kind offer of wishing you could help. That’s the good and bad about blog friends. Great people we are there for you, but can’t actually be there for you!

Oh my gosh, that is awful! I had a similar experience back in April, I was throwing something away into the trash can (outside) and next thing I knew, I was flat on my back and heard that eerily, disgusting and sickening CRACK too. I ended up breaking both my tibia and fibula /dislocating my ankle requiring surgery. I swear I'll never get that sound out of my head. So sorry that you have to go through this. :(

Good luck with your ortho today and hopefully you'll be back to 'normal' soon. :)

    Ashlee Reply:

OWWWWW! Luckily, as long as I don’t do something to make it worse, I won’t need surgery!

owie wowie ashlee. hopefully your new cast from the ortho won't be quite as restrictive.

    [Reply]

    Ashlee Reply:

Luckily the cast leaves my elbow free, so it’s nicer that I can do more. but at the same time since I can move it more I’m also free to move a bit too much and hurt myself worse.

@Kari @ Ucreate, Thanks! I hope so too. This is cutting into my Lagoon plans for the summer. Although I did get a Water safe cast, so I can still swim and shower, I can’t ride anything that requires a grip!

That bump in the first picture looks very similar to the bump on my son’s wrist when he broke his wrist last year on his brother’s birthday. He slipped on wet leaves while riding his bike. Hope you heal quickly. :)
