I made this Shell beanie for my new baby niece. My sister is planning on taking monthly picture with this hat for the first year, so I’ll add a few rows over the year! Here is how it started!
Here is her one month pictures (and isn’t my sister GORGEOUS!) you can follow every month on my sisters photography blog!
I used Lion Brand Baby’s First yarn, this stuff is AMAZING! I LOVE it, it’s so so SO soft, and very thick. I want to get more and make a full blanket out of it, seriously the way it feels is ADDICTIVE. I’m all about texture when it comes to the yarn I work with.

Beanie
materials:
Hook: N15/10.00mm
Yarn: Lion Brand Baby’s First Yarn
abbreviation:
ch (chain)
sl st (slip stitch)
sc (single crochet)
dc (double crochet)
Crown
Start with a magic ring
Row 1: 6 sc in magic ring, DO NOT JOIN (you may want to place a marker here to keep track of Rnd)
Row 2: 2 sc in each sc of previous round (12 sc)
Row 3: (2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next stitch) 6 times, (18 sc)
Row 4: (1 sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch) 6 times (24 sc)
Row 5: (1 sc in the next stitch, 2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 2 stitches) 6 times (30 sc)
0-6 months stop here
Row 6: (2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 4 stitches) 6 tmes (36 sc).
6-12 Months stop here (you’ll have to “cheat” on the first row of shells and skip an extra stitch once)
Row 7: (2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 5 stitches) 6 times (42 sc)
18 Months-3 years stop here (you’ll have to “cheat” on the first row of shells and skip an extra stitch twice)
Shell Sides
Row 1: ch4 (this counts as first dc and and extra ch), 2dc in same stitch (see above), *skip 4 sc, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next sc* repeat from * to beginning chain. dc in the first stitch (the one with the ch4, 2dc), sl st in 4th ch (see below).
Row 2: *ch 4, 2dc* in first chain 1 space, *2dc, 1 ch, 2dc* in each ch 1 space around, dc in first stitch, sl st in 4th ch.
Rows 3-4: repeat Row 2
0-3 months stop here
Add a row every few months as needed! If you want to START with a larger size I’d MEASURE if you have your model close by, but for a guess (since my model is still little- if it’s different than this when you try it let me know!) I’d say:
3-6 months – 5 rows,
6 months to 1 year – 6 rows
1 -3 years – 7 rows

Where do you get your hooks? I can only find tapered hooks. And yours are different. And I know they always do a better job! 😀 Thanks. And I LOVE your patterns and blog!

I buy so many (they always get lost) I got a bunch in Japan, and the rest at Joann’s or Michael’s.
