Quilt binding

Here is how I did my tree skirt binding.  I am happy with how it turned out, but I think I might try a different style next time I bind a quilt just to try it out.  Don’t forget to go see the tree skirt tutorial and the stocking tutorial on the blog!

binding quilted ruffled tree skirt

I decided to use 1 1/2 inch strips for my binding. I put the fabrics right side together at 90 degrees.  Then sewed at a 45 degree angle from one corner to another.

Cut off the excess edges.

Open it up and iron it!  You’ll want to make sure you sew together enough strips that it is long enough to go completely around the quilt (or in this case my tree skirt!)

quilt binding folding ironing

Fold in both side 1/4 inch and iron them down.

Then fold it in half and iron it again!

sewing the binding on the top

Open it back up again, lay it on top of your quilt right sides together.  Sew along your ironed 1/4 line all the way around your project leaving a tail on each side a few inches long each.

sew the beginning and end of binding

Once you get all the way around you’ll want to sew the tails together using the same style you did before  when you put the strips together.  Then finish sewing the binding onto the top of the quilt/skirt.

fold the binding over and sew

Fold the binding back up and around the edge of the quilt (tree skirt).  Pull it tight and around the top.  Now here is the part I totally spaced taking a picture of! (Grrrr  there is one picture in every craft I regret not capturing- this time a crutial step!).  Your actually going to sew around the quilt again, from the top, where the binding meets the quilt CATCHING the folded over binding from the other side while you do.

Here you can see the back side.  You can see how the stitches from the front caught the back side.  And finally the finished binding around the quilt!   Don’t forget to check out the rest of the tree skirt tutorial! And while your at it the stocking tutorial as well!

I’ve always wondered how to do this without doing it by hand. Maybe now I can finish a lap quilt. Thanks!

This was my 1st completed quilt, I’m half way done with a large queen sized quilt. I’m enjoying it. I’m not sure this first trial is the best style for binding, but it worked! I have another style I’m going to try on the big one! Thanks for your comment!

  4. [...] So I finally got around to making the silhouette jewlery I was hoping to make. I love these longer earwires, the tiles dangle and move well, and it looks great!  I actually made two different sizes of images for the earrings. What do you like better?  First is the small full images at the bottom of the glass tile. Can I just say, taking a picture of your ear’s is HARD!  I’ve got to teach someone around here HOW to take a picture so I can make this look nicer!  Or I guess let someone else wear them for a photo!  But you can see the length and get an idea this way!And next is the larger image but only half the face.  What do you think?  Since I have 4 kids, not two, I actually put images of the boys on the back side.  And with my super short hair you can actually SEE the back! Next up, the necklace. I’m still looking for the perfect spacer beads for in between, since I have so many kids.  Obviously this works great with 1 or two kids, even three.  Four is probably pushing it, but heck, why not!  I love it!  I can’t wait to wear them tomorrow!  These are actually made with glass tiles that are scrabble size.  Much better than my first attempt with the 1 inch square!   Not to big, not to small, with a teeny tiny ball chain! For the backs of these I actually just put their initials.  I know you can’t really see them with the bail, but I didn’t want a color, since they might flip over and I want to be able to wear them with everything, and plain white seemed silly.  So an initial was a good choice.  Of course I maybe should have made them smaller and put them lower!  Oh well, next time!See?  They could really use some spacers…   Anyway, I’m adding these to my Etsy store and they’d make GREAT mother’s day gifts!!!  You could also put the pendant on a charm bracelet, or like my grandma wears a charm NECKLACE (actually she has like 5 now…)For a tutorial on how to create the silhouettes yourself go to this tutorial I did a few months ago … [...]

  17. [...] After seeing this birthday part at hip hooray blog here, I fell in LOVE with her table cloth.  But buying fabric long enough to fit around the table in every color?  No way I could afford that.  So I bought a bunch of those cheap vinyl birthday party tablecloth and used that instead of fabric.   It was a fun experiment.  I wasn’t sure if it would sew well, or if it would work with the ruffler, but it did and was fun!  It was really windy and it made the ruffles flow and fly it was really fun to see all the colors! I actually had almost an entire roll in blue left over from the Dr. Seuss party so I used that as my base.  First I measured my tables.  My table is 39″ x 45″ so I added 39+39+45+45= 168″  (or 14′) so I unrolled that amount for around the table.  Then I cut it to right height, 29″.  For the ruffles I cut them 6 inches tall and just started ruffling.  I’m actually not sure how long they were, since I just cut off the leftover at the end.  I had my ruffler settings to ruffle every stitch, and at about 1/3 the full ruffle lengths.  Also I had my stitch setting at 4, which is the longest stitch my machine will do. I started at the bottom of the table (actually I started at the top with the first table cloth, it was a nightmare, so for the second I got smart and started on the bottom!  your welcome!) and ruffled the purple the whole length of the blue sheet. Then I did blue, then green, over lapping about 1/2″ to an 1″ (depending on how straight I was able to keep it as I sewed!)Then the yellow and the orange.  Next I actually used my regular sewing foot to sew this 14 feet of ruffles onto the 39″ x 45″ top of the tablecloth (just another length of the blue).  And once that was done I went back to the ruffler and added the red ruffle.  In the first tablecloth I actually did the red ruffle first, then the rest and THEN sewed it to the top.  It was really difficult to get it through the machine so I figured it I sewed the sides and top together before adding the red ruffle it would be easier.  It was, but not much.  Maybe next time I’ll just tape the sides to the top…?  Although with the wind we had I’m not sure that would have worked! And here is what it looked like in the end! It was on both the craft table and the food table and it turned out SO cute! I made both of them in about an hour in the morning before the party so super easy (the second one took half the time, or less, than the first one).To see the entire Rainbow Garden Birthday party click here!
